“if you want to be careful, shouldn’t you stop going there?”

Another cop down the way a bit:

おいコラ！いまなんじだとおもってる！

“Hey! Don’t you know what time it is?!”

Talk to guy by little house with a sign:

やあネスちゃん。いんせきがごーーーーーーっとすごいおとをたてておちてねえそりやもうたいへんだった。

“Ah, Ness. That meteor was so loud! Now it’s hard to get through.” (? – そりや)

おれはいつもニンニクをたべてからだをつよくしてるからへいきだったけど

“I was calm since I always eat garlic to strengthen my body”

いっぱんのしみんならきをうしなってたろうね。

おれはいいけどおまえはじゃまになってるんだ！

“It’s ok for me to be here; but you’re in the way!” (last two lines kind of condescending, but maybe in a kidding sort of way. Depends on if Ness and Pokki are friends or enemies.)

Ok, here’s something that will (hopefully) be a little more fun. Mother 2 is a rather different Japanese Super Nintendo RPG. Unlike most (“Final Fantasy”, “Dragon Quest”, etc) it is not all swords and sorcery, but is set in the present day. Or in the 1990′s’; whatever. Mother 2 is known as “Earthbound” in the US.

What I’m going to do is play through the Japanese version of Mother 2 and write down the dialog, translating as I go. It seems that there are no kanji at all in the game (made for kids) so no problems with kanji look up. The dialog seems pretty colloquial, so that should be some good practice. I’ve never played through the game before, and I hear it’s one of the best, so hopefully it can stay interesting.

I’ll get words translated, when needed, from Jim Breen’s WWWJDIC and help with the storyline as needed from Gamefaq’s Earthbound page.

Here we go!

“On this day in 1997, Ryoko Sakai became the first female helicopter pilot in the National Self Defense Force at Kagoshima prefecture’s Kanoyashi Maritime Self Defense Force Air Base. Currently, she is a petty officer 2nd class.”

That 誕生 there in the first sentence kind of threw me for a look. Meaning is birth, as in 誕生日 = birthday. But surely this is not talking about Ms. Sakai’s birth in 1997 … she would be a 12 year old helicopter pilot in the Japanese navy now! Maybe it means commissioned, or graduated helicopter school, or something to that effect.

Usually, it seems foreign words that were adopted into Japanese a long time ago were given kanji and a Japanese name when taken into the language, but nowadays they just use katakana to “adopt in” a new foreign word … this selections shows some exceptions to that rule! NASA is the 航空 (aviation) 宇宙 (space) 局 (department), the Mars Global Surveyor is the 無人 (unmanned) 火星 (Mars aka “fire star”) 探査 (investigation) 機 (machine). Kind of shows the value of kanji – you can really get an idea of the meaning of something just by reading the word. In English or other non-pictographical (linguistic term? Probably not.) languages, you can read the word but still have no clue what it means unless you look it up or someone explains it to you or you can figure it out by context.

　大阪の鶴見（つるみ）緑地（りょくち）でひらかれていた国際花と緑の博覧会（花の万博）が1990年のこの日、183日間の会期（かいき）をおえ、幕（まく）をとじました。海外から82か国・55国際機関（きかん）が参加（さんか）したアジア初の国際園芸（えんげい）博。総入場者（そうにゅうじょうしゃ）の数は2312万6934人でした。

Ok, I don’t have the time today to do full translation. But at first glance, it looks to be talking about the end of a 183 day long international flower festival (I didn’t know they had such things!) in Osaka on this day in 1990. A lot of people from a lot of places attended.

I’ll leave the specifics as an exercise to the reader.

“On this day in 1972 in Beijing, talks to normalize diplomatic relations between Japan and the People’s Republic of China were settled with the signing of a joint declaration by Prime Minister Tanaka Kakuei and Premier Zhou Enlai. The declaration sang the praises of the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two nations and their friendly, cooperative relationship. Thus from this day forward, Japanese-Chinese diplomatic relations were established.”

周恩来（しゅう・おんらい）? Who’s that? Although it would usually be Romanized as “Shu Onrai,” this is actually none other than Zhou Enlai. I guess his name sounds a bit different when pronounced in Chinese. It is really interesting how Japan and China share so many kanji, but the pronunciations are not always the same (although in this case, they are pretty similar.) It’s cool how the characters themselves hold the meaning … I think a Japanese person listening to a Chinese conversation would have no clue what was going on, but if he/she read a transcript in kanji, they would at least have an idea of what was going on. (and v.v. for Chinese <-> Japanese)

The other thing of note in this passage is うたいあげられた. Just look at the meaning below and see if you can translate it and not make your sentence sound totally cheesy….
